Darth Vader of the Weight Loss Universe
Many people struggle with weight loss, or they do lose weight for a while but find it very hard to motivate themselves to do exercises, to keeping up to the calorie restrictions, avoiding junk food etc. Hey, one chocolate cookie can’t be all that bad! And then the whole package is gone and we are back to the vicious cycle of overeating, frustration and cravings and are ready to give up for this time as we have messed up the diet anyway.
So, why is dieting all that hard to do?
Is there no easy way out?
Yes, and No!
No – you can’t switch off gravity (not yet at least) and there is no magic pill that gets rid of our fat while we keep on doing what we are doing which got us fat in the first place. And inwardly we know that if we keep searching for the easy way out, this is only an excuse for not taking the right steps to finally lose weight. We all know what we have to do, we know our worst food choices, which are most likely the foods we love most
We know we need to eat less and exercise more. We know, we know, we know! But why is it so hard to do? Even if we know it is good for our health and brings us closer to our ideal weight with all the related good feelings and benefits.
It seems something is holding us back!
Something detects that we are off our usual course with our new healthy eating habits that we are forcing on ourselves using willpower. And the moment we focus on something else, we don’t really notice our hand reaching out to the donut that our colleague has just offered us. There must be evil forces dragging us back to the land of all-you-can-eat!?
Yes, something is dragging us back to our old bahavior, but it is no evil forces, it is just our subconscious mind. While we can decide within a second that we are now serious and really, really want to lose weight, our subconscious mind takes a bit longer to get that.
Our subconscious mind gets thousands of messages during the day, if not millions, and often these messages are contradicting itself (“I want to be slim” and 5 minutes later “I want that donut”). So, the subconscious mind goes with what message it gets more often and guess which one that is? “I am a slim gorgeous goddess”???
Making your subconscious mind your ally
The good news is, if the goal you have consciously decided upon is not in alignment with your subconscious mind, you only have to tell your subconscious mind over and over again what your new goal is and it will start believing it. Much as if you speak to a toddler, if you want them to do something, you’ll have to remind them over and over again! Actually, sometimes I think it can easier to convince my subconscious mind of me being a slim gorgeous goddess than getting my 3 year old to tidy up her room
And if we take the whole concept a bit further that is where the fun starts! Once you have convinced your subconscious mind about your new goal, it will become your ally and start dragging you towards that goal, your ideal weight! You still have to want to lose weight, to decide for that, you still have to do the right things like eating less calories and exercising (you still can’t switch off gravity), BUT it becomes so much easier to do!
So, YES there is an easy way out, it just isn’t what we were looking for all the time. It’s in our head and it was there with us all the time!
And even Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were the same person, so decide what you want your subconscious mind to be!

If you have any more tips on how to program the subconscious mind I would love to hear them. I have tried for the longest time to give up my midnight cookie run with no avail. I tell myself that this is not good for me and sometimes I eat a few carrots instead. Then I lie in bed and cannot fall asleep. eventually I’ll break down have a few cookies with a glass of milk and I’ll fall asleep like a baby.
Here is more of a practical tip: have a small cooked/baked potato 3 hours after dinner. This increases your serotonin levels which helps with sleep. For more see here: Potatoes not Prozac
