Are exercises for losing weight necessary?

No, it is not necessary to do exercises for losing weight. BUT, yes you better should do them, at least in the long run. I know, if you are used to a lethargic lifestyle and comfort food is your best friend, then it is already a big step to be finally willing to go on a diet to lose weight and then also having to do exercise just feels to be too much. You simply don’t have the energy for that. That’s ok!

Start with implementing your dietary changes

Start with the dietary changes and focus on implementing these. Once the first pounds are off you might feel more energized and have more motivation to do some exercises for losing weight. Now, when saying exercise I mean everything that moves your body. You don’t have to go to the gym or for a run. Everything that gets you off the sofa is fine, so go play with the kids, go dancing, go bowling with your colleagues or just go out for a brisk walk. In fact, walking is probably the most healthiest “sport” and you can do it even when you are quite a bit overweight.

Add some exercises for losing weight later on

Yes, it does take some motivation to get out and do something and a trick that I used was to “collect positive impressions” while doing that. I used to go on a daily morning run before I had my daughter and I got into that habit by NOT focusing on the should I go or should I not go …, I just go into my running gear first thing in the morning and would feel quite stupid if I then did not go for my run.

How to turn exercising into a positive experience

And once I am out there I am looking for my positive impressions. This could be a beautiful flower, a bird that is singing nicely, something new in the neighborhood, a person smiling at me or just something that looks beautiful in nature. I am very fortunate to live close to the sea and on my morning runs I have seen whales playing in the sea (I would have missed those otherwise), dolphins riding the waves, a stunning full rainbow over the sea and many breathtaking sunrises.

Also, on my runs I try to be grateful for that I can run, that I can move my body. I might not be the fastest, but I can run and it feels good feeling my body functioning so well despite of me thinking it is not perfect. And it is all about feeling good in life, isn’t it?

Start with your diet, later do exercises, but enjoy both!

So my advice is don’t exercise just because you feel you have, rather first focus on getting your diet right. Once you want to do some exercises for losing weight, start slowly and most importantly make it a positive experience!

  • Yeah, that’s very true, do not pressure yourself to go to the gym when you are not feeling it. Overeating is one of the biggest problem in losing weight, instead eat a small amount of food full of nutrients that our body needs.

Thanks Carole, I am glad you like the mails/posts! Here is a post on Abdominal Weight Loss. However, one can’t really lose weight just in one area, general fat loss principles apply like reducing calories (especially from carbohydrates) and doing cardio like a brisk walk. Once you start losing fat, often one does see that first in the face and upper body which is a bit frustrating if you want to get you tummy down. But that will follow if you stick with it, it just takes a bit longer. It looks like you a heading in the right direction, maybe you just need to do a little bit more or stick with it a bit longer to see results. Good luck!
