I’m on diet. Who should I tell?
You have made a serious decision to go on diet and to finally lose a few, or a few more, pounds. You found a new diet scheme that looks doable and promises quick success, this time it’s gonna work out. You are highly motivated!
You want to tell everybody,
so that they can motivate you and admire you for all your sacrifices, while they go on having a few donuts for tea time. Of course while you are watching. But then sipping a sugarless tea keeps you at least busy.
And honestly, maybe you could not have resisted the temptation and had also had a donut. But now that everybody knows, you couldn’t really expose yourself!
It looks like public accountability has saved you from screwing up your diet regime. And in general, that is why everybody recommends to do it.
In my opinion, this is just one more way of forcing your way to success. Meaning, this is rather the hard way to stick to your diet.
Are there people who could sabotage your diet efforts?
It certainly depends on your person and on your circumstances, if you really should tell everybody around you, that your are on diet. It might help, but it also may cause some damage.
There are people who will sabotage your diet efforts. On purpose, because they think it is funny to offer sweets to a dieter, or even unconsciously, because they are jealous that you are on your way to a thinner You and they don’t have the guts to join you in this journey.
Even family and best friends, who should have all the best intentions towards you, might approve of your decision to go on diet (which you interpret as they have thought all along that your were fat!), but they tell you you got it all wrong.
You must go on low carb diet, because that is the only thing that is getting results fast! Shame, you just motivated yourself to a diet that cuts down on overall calories and even allows a cheat day. And now, of course, you are doomed to fail! Is that good for your motivation?
So, should your really tell everybody that you have just gone on diet?
Well, if your are sure that the people you told so are supporting you or even joining you, this can be of greatest benefit to get your through some rough patches in your diet. So, definitely do so!
But if there are any doubts, rather keep your mouth shut! It is hard enough to actually be on diet, but letting people around you discourage you at the same time makes it tougher than it needs to be. You can still tell them later, when your first pounds have fallen off.
Or, you simply wait for that question: “ You look good! Have you lost weight?”
Hmmm, does that not taste sweeter than chocolate?
