Is Cardio Bad For Fat Burning?

To burn fat through exercise we have been told for years and even decades that cardio is the way to go. Go for a 40 minutes run, use the treadmill or a stationary exercise bike. Stay in the aerobic zone and keep your movement even and constant, and you will burn fat and not carbohydrates. And it is the fat that we want to get rid of, right?

So far so good and science has confirmed the above. Some marathon runners even drink a cup of olive oil which gives them the energy to get through the race. Now, most of us don’t run for hours and hours and we’d rather want to lose fat instead of putting more into us, so let’s just be sure that this fat burning concept does work for us.

While it is true that cardio makes you burn fat, there seems to be a catch to it. The catch being that you burn fat WHILE doing cardio, but once you are finished, certain hormone levels go down prompting your body to burn carbohydrates for the rest of the day!

Good news is that is also seems to work to other way around: If you do weightlifting, strength exercise or any other anaerobic exercise with short bursts of intense activity, this makes your body burn carbohydrates (sugar) during the exercise and increases hormone levels that start muscle building and fat burning after exercise.

More about that concept in the below video.

so how many of these ten minute sets should i do in place of 1 hour of intense cardio?

  • Claudia

@Shane: I think it is not the question how much of the one replaces the other, cardio still has it’s place. But it is not the one and only to lose fat. I personally do cardio, HIIT and resistance training but not that much of all of them, meaning about 20-30 minutes every second day. For me fat loss is still primarily a function of nutrition.

  • I agree about the “function of nutrition” conecept claudia. i dunno why don’t people just start running and doing push-ups in order to keep shape. Don’t get me wrong i’m not flaming others, i was embarassed about my weight one year ago, but once i started eating more proteins than fat and began doing push-ups on a daily basis, i managed to almost have the body i always dreamed of. I didn’t even have to buy ingredients. And the best thing is, push-ups have become a habit that i can’t get rid of :D great addiction if you ask me lol. If i could do it, then anybody can. wink.

  • please tell me for any particular exercise for cardiovascular person.

  • Any exercise is better than none but will not get you where you want to be without a healthy diet as a complimentary action.

That is true! I would even put a healthy diet first and once you have lost a few pounds and have more energy exercise is not such a drag any more. Just choose a fun activity!

Gloria, if you have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease you surely should take it rather slow. Slow and steady wins the game here, like walking. But best consult with your doctor first!
